Food Fight: What’s the big deal about Prop 37?

You see all kinds of labels on food…

One missing label is the one for GMOs, or Genetically Modified Organisms, and its causing quite of a food fight.  California’s Prop 37, which is known as “the right to know” proposition, is asking for a label that identifies GMOs.

What are GMOs?

GMO’s are crops grown from seeds that are genetically modified or genetically engineered, meaning they are super crops- resistant to droughts and pests.  They can also withstand a chemical pesticide called Roundup that is used on them.

88% of corn and 94% of soy beans are grown from genetically modified seeds.

When the corn grows and a bug eats it, the bug dies.  Then the corn is taken to various food manufacturing plants where it is made into the foods we commonly eat (anything with corn syrup, crackers, ceareals, soy products, snack bars, baby formula). We never know anything about it.  I’ll bet that bug wishes he could have warned us.  Just saying.

Where do these GMOs come from?

Monsanto.

Who is Monsanto?

A biotech firm.  The same firm that made Agent Orange**.  They promised Agent Orange was safe too…

Oh, and FYI, Monsanto also produces the pesticide Roundup.  So, to review, they make pesticide resistant seeds and the pesticide.  Hmmmm.  Interesting…

And wanna know something else?   The 6 largest pesticide companies in the US, including Monsanto and Dow Chemical are funding the NO on 37 campaign.  They are out spending the Yes on 37 campaign by nearly 7 times.                                                                                          Yes on 37:  $6.7 million                                                                                                                        No on 37 :  $41 million                                                                                                                           Yes, nearly 7 times!  Hmmmm.  Interesting.

Prop 37 is a food label law.  You have a right to know.  I’m voting Yes.  What do you think?
